DNA Surname Project
The Chart below shows how increasing the number of markers tested, decreases the number of generations estimate the Time to the Most Recent Common Ancestor (TMRCA) when all markers match.

This graph shows the plot of functions for the various marker matches for 12 and 21 marker tests. As one uses more and more markers, the distribution becomes tighter and tighter about its mean value, and estimates have higher precision.

Haplogroups: Haplogroup 1 (HG1) is found frequently on the Atlantic coast of Europe. Half of the HG1's in the world differ at six or fewer markers. According to Mark Jobling of the Department of Genetics, Dublin, Ireland, he has found that HG1 is the earlier, indigenous Irish variant.1 This data can only tell the most likely origin of the surname.

Haplogroup 2 (HG2) is considered Nordic. Only 18% of the UK population are HG2 but 50% of present Norwegians are HG2. Haplogroup markers are shown at the end of each Goheen Family Group to help you see matched with these groups.

1. Emmeline W. Hill, Mark A Jobling, Daniel G Gradley, Y-chromosome variation and Irish origins, (Nature, vol. 404, 23 March 2000),p 351-352.

The R1b Haplogroup is based on the YCC nomenclature. Haplogroups are classified to deep ancestry (10's of 1000's years ago) and are used in the human Philogenetic tree. This group is the most common haplogroup in European populations. It believed to have have expanded throughout Europ as humans re-colonized after the last glacial maximium 10-12 thousand years ago. The lineage is also the haplogroup containing the Atlantic modal haplotype.
