    • Hi Julie, I am assuming that Joseph S. Goheen is an older brother to Adelbert, they have the same parents, James Wilson or J.W. as he was known as here, and the same mother Mary Ann Burress and the dates work. The info I have lists Adelbert as one of 11 children and the family had lived for a while in Iowa before moving to Minnestoa. I do not have a birth certificate for Adelbert, I do know he was born in 1870 but not the date.

I have become interested in Adelbert Goheen, because he was hung for murder here in Minnesota and I discovered his case while was researching local crimes. He died in 1891, but the extreemly interesting thing about this case is that his older brother, Anderson, gave a death bed confession to the murder, 27 years later. So Adelbert was innocent of the murder, but his brother was guilty.

I have been researching Adelbert's murder trial and history for about 10 years and it is a fascinating story. I have collected a great deal of newspaper clippings, trial transcripts, etc.

It is a little erie for me to actually be corresponding with one of his real live relatives. I feel I have come to know this young man and his family rather well. And although I know you are not a direct descendant of his, he had no children, it is an amazing link for me back to 1891! Thank you for responding to my post.

There is also something else that is a little delicate for actually talking to a Goheen descendant of this particular family. They say that every family has a black sheep or a horse theif hiding in it. Well, I am sad to say that if the police reports and testamony given by Adelbert and others at the time, this particular Goheen family were no angels. They committeed many crimes from cattle thievery, railroad robbery, arson, counterfieting, and also a couple of other murders. Anderson was a rough customer and it seems the mother fully supported and was involved in their life of crime. The father on the other hand seems to be thought of as a good God fearing man, but not very successful in controling his wife or his boys.

So as I said, all this happened 114 years ago and to a family historian, might also be very interesting if you are not too concerned about the black sheep aspect of this branch of the Goheens. In any event it was very good to hear from you. I would love to share any info I have.
