"To the Rt Honno'll S'r Henry Chicheley Kt: his Ma'ties Deputy Governo'r ad Cap't: Genr'll of Virginia And to the Honno'll Councill of State We the subscribers inhabitants and house keepers of St Stephens parish in the County of New Kent most humbly sheweth: That yo'r Petition'rs have been for severall years past burthened w'th an Illegall Vestry Elected and made up for the major part without the knowledge or consent of the parish as the Law Injoynes: and of such Illitterate and Ignorant men as are and have been, Ever Ruled and Awed by one or two particulars persons, who are soe Insulting, and of such Ill disposed and turbulent spirits and dispositions That noe Minister Cann or will stay w'th us or teach amongst us: by w'ch meenes, the Service of God is wholly neglected, our Church gon to Ruine, and Church Disipline and Governemt: almost Clearely aid aside: And forasmuch as our said Parish is not destitute of such Able, discreet, and honest men as may fittly supply the places of severall week and Ignorant persons of the present vestry according to the good Lawes of this Country: Yo'r Pet'rs in all humillity supplicatheth y'or honn's that wee may have Liberty to Elect and make Cleare by the Gen'll voat of the Inhabitants of our said Parish of Persons (for a new vestry) as in our Judgm't may seeme meet and convenient which will Indubiately tend much to the Glory of God, And the peace and welfare of the whole Parish And you's Pet'rs a in all Humility and uty bound for yo'r Honn'rs shall Ever Paray etc.

    • John Cave's will was dated August 6, 1714 and proved in 1721 at Stafford County court; it was recorded in now lost Will Book "K". page 2. He devised 200 acres of land on Axton's Run and adjoining the property of John Gowry and Giles Travers to his son John Cave but he "died so that the above mentioned land fell and reverted to "David Cave of Orange County who was joined by his wife Sarah in conveying the said property to Keene Withers of Hamilton Parish, Prince William County, on Sept. 12 1748.

    • Spotsyvania County was divided into Spotsyvania County and Orange County in 1734. Orange County was divided into Orange County and Culpeper County in 1749. It is probably possible that the Cave families of that area never moved during this time period, even though the counties they lived in did change.

      pages 237-238; of Orange County in St Thomas Parish in Virginia, being indisposed through age and other infirmities, dated 23 July 1756.
      Unto my loving son Robt. Cave, 250 acres upon Negro Run in Orange County adjoyning to Thomas Kimbrough and John Noel.
      Unto my loving son James Cave, 200 acres in Spotsylvania County adjoyning the land of John Fauckner.
      Unto my loving son David Cave, 110 acres in the plantation whereon I life a joyning to my loving sons Benja. Cave and Abraham Mayfield.
      My loving son David Cave executor.
      My personal estate to be divided amoungst my loving children.
      I desire that my executor loving son David Cave sees that my son Joseph Cave be brought up in a Christian manner as can be in his condition.

The executor made oath that he did not know where John Cave the heir [at] law lives. It is ordered that the Sheriff make proclamation at the Court House door according to law.
