Address:
Doylstown Cemetery- "Sudden Death of Councilman Goheen" He Expired Early This Morning at the Presbyterian Hospital After an Illness Lasting a Week: J Warner Goheen, a well Known member of the Bar and a member of Common Council from the 27th ward, died at 2 o'clock this morning at the Presbyterian Hospital. Mr Goheen was fifty years old. He had been ill only about a week, and his death was due to peritonitis following an operation on Thanksgiving Day for appendicitis.
Joseph Warner Goheen was one of the best known men in Councils, and on many occasions won him esteem of his constituents for his zeal in opposing obnoxious measures. He was first elected to the body in November, 1891, to fill the unexpired term of the late President William M. Smith, and in the following spring he was elected for the full term of two years, an endorsement, which was repeated at each recurring election. He was born in Attleboro, Bucks county, September 8, 1849, but early in life formed a desire to win his spurs in a large city. Coming to Philadelphia in his seventeenth year, he first entered the employ of a large mercantile firm. Here he was seized with the ambition to master the study of law. Supreme Court Justice Fell became his preceptor, and Mr Goheen was admitted to the Bar in the fall of 1873. Subsequently he entered the office of Isaac A Hazlehurst, and in 1876 entered into partnership with Henry M. DuBois, which association continued until his death.
Mr. Goheen married a daughter of John B Pugh, the senior member of the Bucks County Bar, and one of the most distinguished residents of that county. Mrs. Goheen is a granddaughter of Judge Fox, one of the earliest Justices in the history of Bucks county. Several times in convention Mr. Goheen took part in discussions, and on more than one occasion he nominated Judge Fell and Judge Hanna for the Bench. In the convention which named Charles F Warwick for City Solicitor, Mr. Goheen offered the name of P. F. Rotherman for the same office. His career in Councils was uniformly marked by his earnest advocacy of measures he believed would benefit the city, while he was consistently an active opponent of schemes and schemers.
In the councils of the Ancient Order of United Workmen, Councilman Goheen took a prominent part. For a term he served as Supreme Vice-Director of the Knights of Honor, and was Grand Director of the Order in Pennsylvania. He was a member of the Young Republicans, the West Philadelphia Republican Club, a member of the I.O.O.F. and of the A.O. U. M. He is survived by a widow and three children.
Arrangements have been made to hold the funeral on Tuesday. Services will be conducted in St. Philips P. E. Church, Forty-second Street and Baltimore Avenue. Interment will be made at Doylestown, Bucks County
